Knowing Yourself: Discover Your Personal Style

Each person has a sense of style that’s unique to them. A person’s style is a combination of their fashion choices and their lifestyle choices.

Are you interested in vintage items? Perhaps you’re a minimalist? Do you prefer high heels or sneakers? Do you have hand-me-down clothes or brand new clothes? You get to decide how you want to express yourself!

Consider how you feel most comfortable dressing each day. The more you practice, the easier it will be to know which style is right for you!

How To Find Your Personal Style In Clothes

Why do some people purchase clothing they are never going to wear? Clothes that don’t express their style or personality. Our goal is to help you avoid some of these common mistakes.

Consider buying products that align with who you are before you buy them. If you don’t want them, give them away or donate them – you’ll be surprised how much easier shopping becomes when you don’t waste time with them.

Remix these guidelines according to your preferences, create your recipes of style. What emotions do you want to evoke in yourself and others? What colors appeal to you? How would you describe your shape?

1) Know Your Body Type, Shape, And Profile

Have you ever been to a boutique and fell in love with a dress only to discover that when you tried it on, it looked completely different? This leaves you wondering what style dress – if any – would work for you? At times, it may seem that there are a lot of clothes, but nothing that suits you.

Knowing your body type, shape, and profile is the first step in determining what will work for you.

Here are some tips for identifying your body type:

  • The straight body shape describes people who are tall and thin with a balanced waist-to-hip ratio. As a result, your torso is longer than it is wide, and proportionally, this is reflected in the length of your legs. You usually look best with straight lines because they balance out your figure.

  • Pear-shaped bodies are characterized by wide hips and narrow shoulders. The best dress for this body shape is usually an A-line dress. If the skirt falls below the widest part of your hips and flares out at the hem, it will balance your figure by drawing attention away from your waist while still complementing it.
  • An hourglass body shape, displayed in many fashion categories, is when your hips are narrower than your shoulders. For this body type, it is best to wear outfits that emphasize the waist. In this way, you appear curvier, giving the impression that your hips are wider than they really are.

  • The triangle body shape is characterized by petite figures with narrow shoulders. Pants should fit snugly around your thighs for those of you who wear size 0 or smaller. If you are a size 0-12, then skirts that are slim through the hips will balance your body shape.

  • A pear-shaped body has a heavier middle part than an apple-shaped body. Clothing that balances out your top and bottom halves by drawing attention away from one while highlighting the other works best on this body type.

You can also improve your profile by following these tips for all body types:

Invest in fabrics that drape well, such as sheaths, stretch knits, and other fabrics that look inexpensive but feel like cardboard underneath clothes rather than stiff synthetics that look cheap, but feel like cardboard.

Wear dresses with natural waistlines if possible so as not to accentuate areas we want to hide (or need less of)!

Make sure your upper and lower body proportions are balanced by wearing clothes with sleeves at least as long as your mid-arms and pants that are long enough to cover your shoes.

2) Get Inspiration From The World Around You

Try looking at people around you if you are having trouble coming up with ideas of how to dress better. Look out for what they wear, when they wear it, and what they wear it with. There may be something outside of your comfort zone that may work for you.

You can find the right colors, cuts, and styles by looking at people who dress similarly to how you want to look. For example, if someone is wearing something colorful with patterns or prints on it and you want to try something like that, look for people who wear those things.

If someone is wearing pants or skirts with volume and you want to do the same thing, then look at what they are wearing them with – shoes? Cancardigan? Jacket? Hat? There will be different combinations of clothes but there might be one in particular that works well for you. The more specific the better!

You should always stay true to your personal style while remaining open-minded to new ideas.

3) Dress For The Season

This idea is pretty self-explanatory- with the seasons changing every few months or so, there are plenty of opportunities to change up your personal style with the clothes that are available!

Getting rid of clothes you haven’t worn in the past season is also a good idea. Seasons are also a great way to experiment with new styles and find out what you like.

Look for seasonal favorites like boots, coats, and dresses. Lightweight fabrics are ideal for spring and summer, such as cotton blends, lace, sheer fabrics, silk, linen, chambray, seersucker, jacquards, chiffon, tulle, or rayon.

Fall and winter: You should wear heavy coats, suits, shirts, and other garments. Wool suiting fabrics, cashmere, corduroy (in the colder months), peacoats, or mink coats will keep you warm without sacrificing your personal fashion style.

Shop ahead of time for the best deals and you’ll be able to wear what you buy before anyone else!

4) Clean Out Your Closets

If you want to define your personal style, look no further than your closet. Take a look at your clothes, shoes, and accessories to figure out what types of items you prefer.

How many colors do you have in your closet? What type of clothing do you prefer to wear–casual wear or formal wear? What brands stand out more than others?

Your uniqueness makes you stand out! Black turtlenecks might appeal to one person while a bright orange top would be more appropriate for all. In other words, don’t try to fit into someone else’s personal fashion style if it doesn’t work well with who you are.

Despite the fact that this may sound like a daunting task, going through your closet – or even your laundry pile – will give you a better understanding of what makes you feel good.

Keep an eye out for recurring themes, such as necklines, cuts, patterns, color combinations, and other stylistic details. This insight will help you develop your look in the right direction.

Pruning is essential to keep your closet in bloom. You can do it with these 11 steps:

1. Get four boxes or bins and label them: Keep, Donate, Sell, and Recycle.

2. Empty your closet: Although this may seem overwhelming, it will help you determine what still works.

3. Try your stuff on: Keep items that fit, and items that don’t fit may be placed into one of three other boxes.

4. Find a seamstress to help you repair damaged garments, or repair them yourself.

5. Donate unwanted items that are in good condition.

6. You can place worn-out or damaged items in the recycle bin.

7. Decide how your off-season clothes will be stored.

8. Add the items back into categories.

9. Donate to the nearest Goodwill or email friends in need of a gift. Consignment shops may also be able to buy back items that are in good condition.

10. You can use recycled clothes as rags when cleaning. There are usually recycle bins in stores or you could consult the nearest textile recycling center.

11. Have fun!

A clean closet is the best way to express your personal style.

5) Choose The Right Colors For Your Personal Style

You invest a lot of time and money into your wardrobe, which is why you want to choose pieces you’ll love for years to come. Color plays an important role in developing your personal fashion style, from brightening up your work clothes with a splash of color to selecting the perfect suit or dress.

Wearing colors that complement your complexion is one way to make sure what you wear reflects your personality. Here are a few examples of how to do so:

Consider wearing red wine (red), purple, dark green, or dark blue if you have fair skin. If you have a medium skin tone, wear lighter colors like light pink, yellow, light green. Wear browns, lighter pinks, and red if you have darker skin.

See our blog on: How Do I Pick Colors That Look Good on Me? for more tips on picking the right color for your complexion.

6) Create A Personal Lookbook

Once you’ve identified your best styles, colors, and garments, you need a place to collect and sort them. Create a personal lookbook and collect your favorite outfits. You will be able to quickly find out what works for YOU! Not just the most popular picks on Pinterest or Instagram!

Creating a digital lookbook is a fun and creative way to showcase your unique style and share it with friends and family. Unlike physical objects, digital albums allow you to create a virtual space that you can customize to your heart’s content.

With these albums, you can also access them from anywhere, so you never have to worry about forgetting the perfect outfit.

The main disadvantage of a physical lookbook is not having access to it when you need it most. When your physical lookbook is at home and you’re out with friends, what should you do?

Fashion is constantly changing, so it’s important to stay open-minded and experiment with new styles. In spite of that, you should still stick with the styles you like. Here are a few tips for being more selective when shopping for clothing.

  • Don’t buy clothes just because they’re on sale – if you don’t like them, there is no point in buying them at a discount.

  • Avoid impulse buys – while they may seem like a great idea at the time when your impulses become regrets, later on, things won’t feel so great!

  • Browse shopping apps or online stores before going out shopping – you’ll save time and gas money by not going out to the stores, and you’ll gain a sense of what is in style.

Find trends that suit your personal fashion style. Trends are there for you to use as a jumping-off point, so find one that works with what you wear comfortably and try it out!

*Tip: If you don’t know where to start when searching for trends online or in stores, ask friends who have similar styles how they dress.

8) Know Your Style: Describe Your Personality in Three Adjectives

What would your friends say about you? How would they describe you? When you think of yourself, what words come to mind?

When your friends describe your personality type, what are the three most common words they use? ____, _____, and _______. Give it some thought.

If you were to describe yourself as a person in general, what would people say is your defining characteristic?

You can also take one of the many personality tests available, such as ‘Type Theory‘.

Try searching for ‘What is your personality type?’ on Google, for example. On the first page of the results, you will see many different tests to choose from. Answer honestly and pick a type that feels right to you and see how many you get!

Carl Jung created the type theory in 1913. It includes Extraverted (E) vs Introverted (I), Sensing (S) vs Intuitive (N), Thinking (T) vs Feeling(F), Judging (J) vs Perceiving (P).

Try creatively matching styles based on your results.

9) Get Your Personal Style Inspiration From Outside Of Fashion

Looking outside of fashion for inspiration is one of the best ways to find your own personal style. You don’t have to wear mainstream clothing! Vintage objects, your favorite TV shows, or nature can all contribute to your personal fashion style. These are great places to get truly unique ideas that reflect your own taste!

There are other ways to find your personal style outside of the world of fashion:

Take a look at old family photos and note what kind of clothing they’re wearing and how they style their hair and makeup.

Research influential designers such as Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, or Vivienne Westwood. Check out home decorating blogs.

Your journey to finding your own personal fashion style is just beginning! Keep in mind that finding out what works best for you can take time. Most importantly, never forget that you are unique, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!

10) Ask A Friend Or A Stylist For Help

Fashion isn’t easy for everyone. If you’ve reached a point in your adult life where you realize you need help with your style, you’re not alone. It can be very difficult to navigate the waters of personal shopping and dressing well when you don’t have anyone to bounce ideas off of or to share advice with.

Finding your personal style is a process that requires patience and time. When you read articles, watch movies and explore different avenues for fashion inspiration, you are more likely to find something that clicks for you.

If you don’t have anyone to consult with, visit a department store and find an employee who specializes in fashion.

Having a conversation with others can be very beneficial! Some may share tips about their personal style or suggest ways for you to incorporate yours into clothing that looks good on you.

You never know what someone else will say until you speak up.

11) Use the Right Accessory

Your personal style can be taken from a look to a statement with the right accessories. Adding a scarf or a necklace can make you stand out and make you feel more complete.

The addition of jewelry, handbags, sunglasses, and belts can also help you ‘tweak’ your fashion go-to pieces, and is a budget-friendly way to add versatility to your wardrobe.

Play it safe by wearing neutral accessories that match with everything, such as black or brown belts or a pair of earth-tone sandals. Wear lava rock bracelets or metal bracelets to add some edge and bling to your look.

12) Size And Personal Style Make a Perfect Match

Knowing how clothes will fit is one of the most important elements of finding your own unique style. As brands tend to size their garments inconsistently, a term that’s commonly known as vanity sizing.

As an example, if you usually wear small sizes. An extra-large size may be necessary for another brand for you. When shopping online, it is always helpful to know what your body measurements are.
